In the IELTS test there is no pass or fail mark as a result. All candidates are graded on their performance, using scores on a scale from 1 to 9 for each of the four modules - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
The four individual scores are averaged and rounded to produce an Overall Band Score. Each band score corresponds to a descriptive statement giving a summary
of the English language skill of a candidate classified at that level. The scores can be reported in either whole or half bands (e.g. 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0). The table below shows the nine Bands and their descriptive statements:

It contains an individual band score for each of the four modules as well as the Overall Band Score. In general, universities request a minimum total score of 6.5 for entrance to academic courses. Top programs requires at least 7.5 score. Minimum IELTS score of 5.0 is required for under-graduate programs. Different institutions have their own entrance requirements and may require minimum scores for each of the four modules. You should check the score required by the university, to which you are applying. IELTS scores are valid for two years and if you don’t get required score to get admission, you can retake the exam.
